Houses in Astrology: What the 12 Houses Mean

Houses are one of the more complex parts of a birth chart, twelve segments traditionally linked to different areas of life, from home to career to relationships. Understanding what they represent adds real depth to a chart, even before you can calculate your own.

What Are Houses in Astrology?

In astrology, the houses are twelve segments of the sky, calculated for the exact moment and place of your birth, each traditionally associated with a different area of life. Where a planet falls in your chart tells you what is happening, and the sign it falls in tells you how it tends to show up, the house it falls in traditionally points to where in life that theme plays out most strongly, at home, at work, in relationships, and so on.

Unlike the zodiac signs, which are fixed to the same twelve constellations for everyone, houses are calculated individually for your exact birth time and location. This is what makes house calculations considerably more technical than sign calculations, and why two people born on the same day in the same city, but at different times, can end up with quite different house placements even if their signs are identical.

The Difference Between a Sign and a House

A common point of confusion for beginners is mixing up signs and houses, since both use the same twelve-part structure. A sign describes a style or temperament, Aries energy is direct and fast-moving wherever it appears in a chart. A house describes a stage or setting, the area of life something is happening in, regardless of which sign is involved.

Think of it this way: your Sun sign describes your core identity in a certain style, bold, cautious, curious, whatever that sign brings, while the house your Sun falls in traditionally points to which area of life that identity is most focused on expressing itself, career, home, relationships, or elsewhere.

A Quick Overview of the 12 Houses

Each house is traditionally linked to a broad life theme: the 1st house to self-image and first impressions, the 2nd to money and personal resources, the 3rd to communication and immediate surroundings, the 4th to home and family, the 5th to creativity and romance, and the 6th to daily routine and health.

The 7th house is traditionally linked to partnerships and marriage, the 8th to shared resources and transformation, the 9th to travel and higher learning, the 10th to career and public reputation, the 11th to friendships and community, and the 12th to rest, privacy, and the subconscious. This is a simplified overview, full house interpretation traditionally considers several additional factors together, including which sign each house cusp falls in and which planets, if any, occupy each house.

A helpful way to group them: the 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th houses are traditionally called angular houses and are read as the most prominent, covering self, home, partnerships, and career. The 2nd, 5th, 8th, and 11th are succedent houses, traditionally read as building on and stabilizing what the angular houses start. The 3rd, 6th, 9th, and 12th are cadent houses, traditionally read as houses of learning, adjustment, and transition between one life theme and the next.

Why Your Rising Sign Matters for Houses

Your Rising sign marks the beginning of your 1st house, the exact degree of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon at your birth moment becomes the starting point from which every other house is measured around your chart. This is the same reason your Rising sign requires such a precise birth time, since houses depend on that same precision to be calculated correctly. A birth time that is off by even a few minutes can shift not just your Rising sign, but the exact starting degree of every house that follows from it, which is why house calculations are considered even more time-sensitive than the Rising sign alone.

Do You Need Software to Calculate Houses?

To be direct about it: yes, and this website does not currently calculate house placements. Our calculators determine your Sun, Moon, and Rising signs using real astronomical positions, which gives you the starting point, your Rising sign, that houses are built from, but we do not yet offer a full house breakdown. House calculations require choosing a house system, there are several different traditional methods, and additional astronomical computation beyond what our current calculators provide.

We would rather tell you plainly what we do and do not calculate than imply a feature that is not yet built. If house calculations are something we add in the future, this guide will be updated to reflect it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a house and a sign?
A sign describes a style or temperament, while a house describes the area of life something is happening in. The two work together but answer different questions.
Does this site calculate my houses?
Not currently. We calculate your Sun, Moon, and Rising signs using real astronomical positions, and your Rising sign is the starting point for house calculations, but we do not yet offer a full house breakdown.
Why do houses need such a precise birth time?
Houses are measured starting from your Rising sign, which shifts roughly every two hours, so the same birth-time precision that affects your Rising sign also affects every house calculated from it.
Are there different house systems?
Yes. Several traditional methods exist for dividing a chart into houses, and different astrologers may use different systems, which is part of why house calculation is more involved than sign calculation.
